The dock is on the bank of the River Lune and was built in 1787 to replace an older dock at the town of Lancaster that was further inland.
The Lancaster Canal was completed in 1797 and passed within 3 miles of Glasson Dock. It was realised that building a branch line of the canal to the dock would increase the volume of traffic on the canal, and improve communications for the dock.
This lock connects the canal to the dock.
There is no plaque on the anchor to give any information about it.
