Homesteaders came to theh Badlands when the Milwaukee completed track through the White River Valley in 1907. Hometeads made acheckerboard of the land with settlers living in tarpaper shacks, tents and sod houses. Most of the homesteads turned into "Starvation Claims" and were abandoned or sold.
