Der Erzengel Michael:
Michael ist ein Erzengel und kommt in den Traditionen des Judentums, Christentums und Islams vor. Im Christentum gilt Michael als der Bezwinger des Teufels in Gestalt eines Drachens sowie als Anführer der Himmlischen Heerscharen. Außerdem kommt Michael in der kirchlichen Tradition die Rolle des "Seelenwägers" am Tag des jüngsten Gerichts zu. Michael ist neben Gabriel, Raphael und Uriel einer der vier Erzengel.
Der Erzengel Michael ist Patron verschiedenster Städte und Regionen (u.a. Deutschlands im Allgemeinen) sowie verschiedener Berufsgruppen (wie der Schweizer Polizei).
Darstellung am Völkerschlachtdenkmal:
Die Statue / bzw. das Hochrelief zeigt den Erzengel Michael in Rütsung, mit Flammenschwert in der rechten Hand und dem Schild der Kreuzritter in der linken Hand. Über seinem Kopf stehen die Worte "SANCT - MICHAEL".
Das Völkerschlachtdenkmal wurde in Erinnerung an die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig nach Entwürfen des Berliner Architekten Bruno Schmitz errichtet und am 18. Oktober 1913 eingeweiht. Die plastischen Arbeiten wurden von den Bildhauern Christian Behrens und Franz Metzner gestaltet. Die Darstellung des Erzengel Michaels stammt aus den Entwürfen des Bildhauers Christian Behrens.

The Archangel Michael:
Michael is an archangel and occurs in the traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Christianity, Michael is considered the conqueror of the devil in the shape of a dragon and as a leader of the Heavenly Host. In addition, Michael takes in the Church's tradition, the role of "Seelenwägers" on the day of judgment to. Michael is next to Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel one of the four archangels.
The Archangel Michael is the patron of various cities and regions (amongst others Germany in general) as well as various professional groups (like the Swiss police).
Representation on the Völkerschlachtdenkmal:
The statue / high relief shows the archangel Michael in suit of armor, with a sword in flames in his right hand and the shield of the crusaders in his left hand. Over his head are the words "SANCT - MICHAEL".
The 'Völkerschlachtdenkmal' is a monument to the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. It was planned by the design of the sculptor Bruno Schmitz and dedicated 18. 10. 1913. The archangel Michael is designed by the sculptor Christian Behrens.
