St. John's Gate Rebuilt city wall between the Gate and the
(also rebuilt) Powder Tower

The Johannistor (German for St. John's Gate) is the only remaining piece of the original Jena city walls. It was first mentioned in 1304, but was rebuilt together with most of the city wall in Gothic style in the 15th century.

The gate survived the bombings of World War II. The neighboring gate, the Pulvertum (German for Gunpowder Tower) was not so lucky. In 2001, the Gunpowder Tower and the wall between both towers were rebuilt and are now an impressive display of (rebuilt) Gothic architecture.

The St. John's Gate, however is still brick by brick the original, unchanged for 400 years.
