"Construite entre 2 quartiers de la ville à partir de 1649 et terminée le 23 juin 1662 à l'initiative du Père Pierre Marmet, moine cistercien, cette chapelle est le résultat de 3 vœux faits à la Vierge par la ville de Salins en 1638, 1639 et 1642, période de la Guerre de Trente Ans. Ils lui demandaient sa protection contre l'armée ennemie du duc de Saxe-Weimar, la peste et la famine.
On note plusieurs originalités pour cette chapelle : Son vocable, Notre Dame Libératrice, n'avait jamais été donné auparavant à un édifice religieux en Franche-Comté.
Sa forme de plan ovale, unique en Franche-Comté, est une idée notée à Rome par un chanoine de Salins. La voûte a d'ailleurs nécessité la réalisation d'un réseau de nervures en bois soutenant des voûtains de plâtre sur lattis.
Elle est couverte par un dôme couronné d’une tour lanterne surmontée d'un coq, le plus grand de Franche-Comté (700 kg!). Le dôme vient d'être rénové et le coq en cuivre étamé remplacé à l'identique en 2007.
Enfin, si la chapelle était isolée à l'origine, elle a été intégrée dans l’hôtel de Ville bâti de 1718 à 1739.
L'intérieur est paré de boiseries à la base des murs alors qu'une balustrade courre tout autour de la chapelle à mi-hauteur.
Un grand retable réalisé entre 1665 et 1670 habille le fond du "chœur".
La grande statue de la Vierge à l'enfant avec des drapeaux et canons à ses pieds est la statue en plomb de Notre Dame Libératrice qui dominait l'entrée autrefois.
Au dessus du retable, à l'aplomb des colonnes, les statues en bois polychrome de la Vierge et de Saint Jean sont du 15e siècle. A l'origine elles appartenaient à un calvaire aujourd’hui démonté.

Its oval shape plane, unique in Franche-Comté is an idea denoted in Rome by a canon of Salins. The vault also need the implementation of a network of wooden ribs supporting vaults plaster lath.
It is covered by a dome crowned with a lantern tower topped by a rooster, the largest of Franche-Comté (700 kg!). The dome has just been renovated and tinned copper rooster replaced identically in 2007.
Finally, if the chapel was originally isolated, it was integrated into the town hall built in 1718-1739.
The interior is adorned with wood paneling at the base of the walls while a railing hounds around the waist-high chapel.
A large altarpiece between 1665 and 1670 dresses the background of the "choir".
The large statue of the Virgin and Child with flags and guns at her feet is the lead statue of Our Lady Liberator who once dominated the entrance.
Above the altar, at the base of the columns, the polychrome wooden statues of the Virgin and Saint John are the 15th century. Originally they belonged to a now dismantled ordeal.
