At 1.6 million acres, the Desert NWR is the largest US refuge outside the state on Alaska.

The refuge is bounded roughly by US 95 to the west and US 93 to the east, and from I -15 to the south to NV 375 to the north. It encompasses 6 major mountain ranges and 7 life zones. Main access is of US 93 near NV 168, and off US 95 near the Corn Creek Field Station/Visitor Center.

Major wildlife includes Mountain Lion, Bighorn Sheep, Coyotes and over 320 species of birds.
