"It was a year ago that Officer Michael Johnson was killed in the line of duty, and the commemoration Thursday -- highlighted by a portion of Highway 87 being dedicated in his name -- was deftly fitting for the native son.
The 5-mile stretch between Highway 85 and Interstate 280 could double as a geographic spectrum of his life, connecting the Gunderson High School alum's South San Jose upbringing to police headquarters, from which he spent the final 14 years of his 38-year life protecting his hometown." (
