The Tongva Indian Village was constructed in 2008 as a cultural exhibit inside the Mission walls as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Claretian Fathers assuming control of the Mission.

This exhibit preserves and explains the history and some of the culture if the Tongva Indians, whose members arrived in the Los Angeles Basin 7000 years ago, and whose culture was almost completely destroyed when the Spanish arrived in California. The Tongva Indians were renamed "the Gabrilenos" by the Franciscans when the Indians were brought into the Mission in 1778.

This sign reads as follows:

"SAN GABRIEL BAND OF GABRILENO MISSION INDIANS VILLAGE

Starting in October 2008 and led by native Indians Matthew Lovio, Andrew Morales, Anthony Morales, Arlene Moreles, Dee Roybal, other tribal members, historian Klaus Dubbert, and C. Dyons all built this Gabrileno Indian village so visitors to the Mission can see what it might look like with the Kiiy house (taller one), sweathouse (smaller one) to reduce weight (like a modern sauna), the ororeyvekish covered area (considered a patio in modern days), the rock where acorn nuts were smashed to get the edible part of the net to eat, and some native plants that were used to make baskets, for medicine and for ceremonies and celebrations."
Group that erected the marker: Claretian Fathers
