These trees were planted by homesteader John R. Porter in 1880. The 3-year old seedlings were brought as seeds from California and planted to enhance the entrance to the 1873 Courthouse.

When this wild area started to be tamed an elegant courthouse was built. One of the pre-eminent citizens of the area and one of the fathers of the burgeoning nursery business that still dominates the area. , John R. Porter (1827-1886) planted these beautiful trees to enhance the stately image of the edifice.
