While at the museum we noticed some new machinery out behind the main museum building, including an RD6 Cat and this D6. Both spent the majority of their lives in the forest skidding logs around. This D6 was always in private hands, working for family owned logging operations.

A bit of the story of the Cat is below, from a plaque mounted by the D6.

This D6 Caterpillar. or 'Cat' for short, has a 92-horsepower, 6-cylinder engine, a higher speed engine than previous model Cats, running at 1200 revolutions per minute instead of 900 revolutions per minute. This D-6 Cat worked many years in the Trout Lake area, south of Revelstoke, skidding logs for the Marlow family, before they soid the Cat to Art Romano. The Hyster D6N winch attached to the Cat is capable of holding from 235 feet to 420 feet of line depending on the diameter of cable (3/4 inch to 1 inch). With a short line and full drum, the winch can pull 15,200 pounds of weight and that number increases to 26,800 pounds with the line out and a bare drum. To compare, a full grown male African elephant, can weigh up to 15,000 pounds.

These machines had many uses in the logging industry, from road building to skidding logs off the cut block to the landing or loading point. This gray, rubber-tired logging arch was homemade by Bob and Dave Woolsey. The logging arch greatly enhanced the skidding capabilities of the Cat. The arch framework used with the winch would allow the leading ends of trees to be raised while being skidded which greatly improved movement. Logging arches became widely used in the BC interior in the 1950s.
