Late in the 19th and early in the 20th centuries the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) encouraged their chapters to place drinking fountains in public places to encourage men to drink water and avoid alcohol. A number of these drinking fountains are still in place today.

This Women's Christian Temperance Union Fountain is located in the tiny hill town of Conway, MA, population 1,897. The 5' high cylindrical granite fountain has a drinking fountain for people ans two smaller wells for animals. The main fountain has the inscription:

WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION
1905

Above the smaller of the two animal drinking well is the inscription:

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL

The larger of the two animal drinking wells is now used as a planter.
