Hyde Park was used during London 2012 for the Triathlon and long distance swimming events. Due to the size of the park and the lake, known as The Serpentine, it made the ideal location with it being in central London.

The Telegraph website has an article about London 2012 and Hyde Park that tells us:

Marathon Swimming: Aug 9 – Aug 10

Capacity: 3,000

Fact: Queen played a concert here in 1976 to an estimated audience of between 150-200,000

Post games: the grandstand and course will be removed

Test event: Aug 6-7, 2011: Triathlon, ITU World Championship Series. Aug 13, 2011: Aquatics (Marathon Swimming), International Invitational

Transport: Hyde Park Corner (London Underground), Green Park (London Underground), Victoria (London Underground, National Rail), Marble Arch (London Underground), Knightsbridge (London Underground), Paddington (London Underground, National Rail)

Hyde Park, one of the largest Royal Parks in London, will provide 3,000 spectators with a fantastic view of the triathlon and marathon swimming events, while a temporary grandstand is set to be constructed for seated tickets.

Since 2010 the park has hosted the triathlon World Championship Series, featuring some of the greats of the sport, and in 2011 the race will be run using the exact course set out for the Olympics.

The park is one of the few venues where spectators may themselves have regularly run, swim and cycled. Not a lot of people can say they’ve had a kick-about at Wembley but many Londoners regularly exercise here.

Its central London location means spectators have many different public transport options to get to and from the events while the general admission tickets will appeal to fans who like to get up close and personal to the action.
