The rock outcrops along the ocean on this head alternate dark and light colors where the younger, darker basalt intruded older, lighter granite.

Near Winter Harbor, at the south end of the Schoodic Peninsula, are rock outcrops that alternate in dark and light bands.

Schoodic Peninsula is a point along the Maine coast east of Mt. Desert Island. The only part of Acadia National Park is located on this feature. A park pass is needed to travel to the point.

We accessed the rock via a trail behind the Schoodic Research Institute. It's a pretty walk that first takes you through evergreen woods among mossy ground, then breaks out into the bare rock.

The rocks layers are horizontal and are about 10 ft wide. According to a book, referenced below, the light colored rock is pink Gouldsboro granite, while the dark rock is basalt and rhyolite. The dikes for the darker rock intruded likely during the Devonian era, about 380 million years ago. The dikes run roughly north-south. The book also says that at least one dike shows some crystalline structure.
