This lighthouse is actually the third lighthouse built near here. The first (first on the Great Lakes) was at the mouth of the river. The second light was atop old Fort Niagara.
The light house was in service from 1872 until 1993, when it was replaced by a beacon in order to save century trees that were obscuring the lens.
THe lighthouse was placed on the NRHP in 1984.
