The flag is based on the coat of arms of the family von Fürstenstein; they owned a castle in the south of the municipality in the Middle Ages, but they were not the owners of the village. The cross in the fly is a symbol for the Abbey of Reichenau, that was the owner of the jurisdiction of Ettingen.
I saw this flag at the road to Hofstetten. This flag is inverted, all documetation show the cross in the fly, not the hoist.
