The flag is rectangular red and white gyronny pattern with Faro's coat of arms in the centre.

A gyronny flag is one divided into eight gyrons by straight lines all crossing at the fess point. This results in a pattern formed of triangles. In Portugal this pattern indicates the community is a city.

The coat of arms on the flag are made up of a blue shield with a castle in the centre standing on a green field. Above the castle is between the two towers is the figure of the Virgin Mary with a star next to her. The shield is surmounted with 5 towers which again denotes a city. Below the shield is the words 'CIDADE DE FARO' (City of Faro). link
