Within Mountain Cemetery are two plaques located in the heart of the cemetery and are dedicated to Capt. William Smith, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. The older plaque reads:

IN THIS CEMETERY IS BURIED

DIED IN SONOMA MAY 5, 1846

WHO SERVED IN THE VIRGINIA NAVY DURING
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

CALIFORNIA STATE SOCIETY
DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
MRS. HARVEY BLANCHARD LYON
STATE REGENT
FEBRUARY 22, 1965

A newer plaque next to the older one reads:

In Recognition of
WILIAM SMITH
MATE of the HAZARD, Virginia Navy, and
CAPTAIN OF THE ALBATROSS, Merchantman
Born, Flowerdew Hundred, VA 14 November 1768
Died, Sonoma, CA May 5 1846

Who served in the Colonial Navy in the Revolution
The Only Known American Revolutionary War Veteran
buried in California

Plaque placed by the
California Society Sons of the American Revolution
11 November 1994

I tried to do some research to find out where in Mountain Cemetery William Smith is buried and found out that the Daughters of the American Revolution societry tried to locate his exact gravesite location but were unable to. They erected these two plaques in the heart of the cemetery to preserve this war veteran's historic and rich life (he took eight oversees voyages to foreign countries in his lifetime).
