It is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

At this point the milestone is 113.25 miles from the start at Leeds and 14 miles from the port of Liverpool.

The milestones on this canal usually have 2 plates showing the distance from both Leeds and Liverpool. In this case both plates are missing and the milestone therefore currently shows no distances.

In addition the milestone is next to a place for boat moorings and someone has made use of the post and made a bench out of it.
