This plaque indicates the position of Geary’s Division during the assault on Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863 during the
Battle of Missionary Ridge, fought November 25, 1863. This Battle was part of the
Chattanooga Campaign and is preserved and maintained as part of the
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The division was commanded by Brig. Gen. John W. Geary. This plaque is located on S. Crest Road, Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TN.

Brig. Gen. John W. Geary
Nov. 25, 1863, 6 P.M.
1st Brigade | – | Col. William R. Creighton. |
2nd Brigade | – | Col. George A. Cobham, JR. |
3rd Brigade | – | Col. Davis Ireland. |
This division being the rear of Hooker’s column in the march from Lookout Mountain reached Rossville about 4:00 P.M. and moved northward along the western base of Missionary Ridge. Creighton’s Brigade led, followed by Cobham’s, both marching in column of regiments, and followed by Ireland’s in support of five batteries of artillery.
Near the base of the ridge to the Division formed in column of brigades. Creighton’s in the first line, Cobham’s forming the second, and Ireland still supporting the artillery.
With this formation the Division moved obliquely up the ridge until reaching a point opposite this tablet it faced fully towards the crest and scaled it about five 6 P.M.

Short Physical Description
Approximately 700 metal position and descriptive markers with raised lettering. Union marker text painted blue; Confederate marker text painted red.
Long Physical Description
Most of these tablets and plaques have integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmenship, feeling, and association to the historically significant period of Commemorative/Park Developement (1895-1899).
