On February 12, 2014, a potential catastrophe was averted when a sinkhole opened up underneath the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. At 5:44am, hours before opening the doors for the day, 8 rare and valuable Corvettes were "swallowed" by the sinkhole inside "The Cone" section of the museum. The estimated damage to the cars was over $1Million and another $5Million estimated damage to the building itself.

Cars that were involved in the incident included 6 owned by the museum and 2 others on loan from General Motors:

1962 black Corvette
1984 PPG Pace Car
1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette

Repair has taken place and the cars in their damaged state are on display once again in the museum.

The event quickly became national news and the museum reaped the rewards for the incident. Attendance numbers have skyrocketed in 2014 and in 2015 following the news.
