The World War Memorial Bridge is the major entry and exit point from the barrier island that is Ocean City. It was built in 1933. It has recently undergone a major reconstruction and is now a modern steel and reinforced concrete bridge. Elements of the old bridge remain including the gateway on the pedestrian access to the bridge. A bronze plaque on the south tower of the gateway identifies it as the World War Memorial Bridge. The plaque is inscribed:
