On its slopes the Ventoux unites all European climate and vegetation zones from the Mediterranean to Lapland. Until well into May, it can snow on the Ventoux. Throughout the year you have but with a strong and very cold acting especially in the summer wind, the Mistral, expected.
The immense gravel field directly below the summit was uncovered only by the clearing of the mountain. As elsewhere in the Provence had cleared the formerly lush trees to build the navy fleets of the ancien régime, but also for firewood and charcoal production. The slopes of the still at times Jean-Henri Fabre as "naked" or "shaved" Berg designated Ventoux are afforested today. Individual representatives of the original vegetation are intensively cultivated and can be admired for example, while walking along the hiking trail GR 9 on the north side. Another special feature is the growing here truffles. UNESCO declared 1990 the Mont Ventoux Biosphere Reserve to ensure the survival of plant diversity in the long term.
