The Great Smokey Mountain National Park has plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Due to the differences in elevation there are different trees at different levels. In the northern part of the park there are hardwood forests that thrive on the Oconaluftee River drainage. Higher ridges hold red spruce and Fraser fir forests. Throughout the park are sugar maple, American beech, yellow buckeye, hobblebush, and yellow birch trees.

Straddling the border of six states of the Southern Appalachians (Northern Georgia, northeastern Alabama, western South Carolina, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, and southwestern Virginia), this biosphere reserve encompasses mainly second growth temperate forests and contains a diversity of habitats ranging from remnant prairie grasslands and swamp forests to high elevation spruce-fir forests and grassy meadows.
