Évolution Du Bâtiment
L’église Notre-Dame-du-Très-Saint-Sacrement fait partie d’un ensemble conventuel qui s’est édifié graduellement. Les pères achètent d’abord une petite parcelle de l’avenue du Mont-Royal et s’installent dans la maison Barré, qui y est déjà construite. La propriété s’agrandit progressivement au gré des acquisitions de lots voisins entre les années 1890 et 1892.
Les pères du Très-Saint-Sacrement confient la conception de leur monastère aux architectes Jean-Baptiste Resther et fils. Ces derniers dessinent un plan d’ensemble, mais vu l’ampleur du complexe conventuel, les religieux décident d’échelonner les travaux sur plusieurs étapes. La construction de l'église débute par la crypte dès 1892. Simultanément, on construit la partie centrale de l’ensemble conventuel, qui est érigée immédiatement devant l’église, bénie le 23 décembre 1894. En 1896, on poursuit la construction de l’ensemble conventuel par l’érection de l’aile du noviciat à l’ouest. Le monastère est quant à lui érigé à l’est en 1907 sur l’emplacement de la maison Barré. Malgré qu’elles aient été construites en plusieurs étapes, la partie centrale, l’aile du noviciat et l’aile du monastère forment un ensemble homogène le long de l’avenue du Mont-Royal qui cache l'église située derrière.
En 1929, une nouvelle aile est élevée sur la rue Saint-Hubert. Elle est l’œuvre des architectes Ernest Cormier et Séraphin-A. Cyr. Un incendie criminel endommage lourdement la partie supérieure du monastère et de l’église le 12 février 1982. On procède immédiatement à leur réfection afin de les remettre dans leur état d’origine. L'église, son abside, sa sacristie, le bâtiment construit devant l'église en 1894, de même que l'extérieur des ailes de 1896 et 1907 sont classées monument historique en 1979.
Lecture Architecturale
La maison des Pères du Très-Saint-Sacrement présente une grande unité architecturale, bien que l’ensemble conventuel ait été construit en plusieurs étapes. L’ensemble prend la forme d’un T avec l’aile principale du couvent, du monastère et du noviciat, qui forme un front bâti sur l’avenue du Mont-Royal, et l’église en position centrale qui se déploie vers l’arrière. La longue façade est ornée selon la mode Second Empire, style très en vogue durant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. On reconnaît ce courant stylistique par l’utilisation d’une fausse mansarde revêtue d’ardoise et le parement de pierre grise à bossages, qui contraste avec la pierre de taille lisse qui entoure les baies.
Le mode d’intégration de l’église à l’ensemble est typique des lieux de culte couplés à un couvent en milieu urbain. Seuls le clocher et l’avant-corps central, qui se démarquent par le soin accordé à l’ornementation, signalent la présence de l’église dans le complexe. On peut notamment remarquer le portique encadré de deux pilastres, la travée centrale en pierre de taille ainsi que les lucarnes monumentales qui mettent l’emphase sur cette avancée faisant office de façade à l’église. Le grand ostensoir apposé au sommet de cette façade rappelle la vocation du sanctuaire dédié au Très-Saint-Sacrement.
À l’intérieur, l’église est aménagée de façon tripartite avec une double rangée de tribunes latérales et se termine par une abside en cul-de-four. Le plafond orné de peintures sur toile marouflée réalisées par l’artiste Georges Delfosse et la polychromie des marbres et des vitraux créent un effet décoratif hors du commun.

Evolution of Building
The Church of Our Lady of the Most Holy Sacrament is part of a convent complex that was built gradually. Fathers first buy a small plot of Mount Royal Avenue and moved into the Barré house, which is already built there. The property is gradually expanding at the mercy of acquisitions of neighboring lots between 1890 and 1892.
The Fathers of the Most Holy Sacrament entrust the design of their monastery to architects Jean-Baptiste Resther and son. They draw an overall plan, but given the scale of the monastery complex, the Fathers decided to stagger the work over several stages. The construction of the church begins with the crypt in 1892. Simultaneously, the central part of the conventual complex was built immediately in front of the church, blessed on December 23, 1894. In 1896, construction continues on the conventual complex by the erection of the novitiate wing to the west. The monastery is meanwhile erected on the east side in 1907 on the site of the Barré house. Despite having been built in several stages, the central part, the wing of the novitiate and the wing of the monastery form a continuum along Mont-Royal Avenue that hides behind the church.
In 1929, a new wing is built on Saint-Hubert street. It is the work of architects Ernest Cormier and Seraphin-A. Cyr. Arson heavily damaged the upper part of the monastery and the church on February 12th 1982. Work is done immediately to return them to their original state. The church, the apse, the sacristy, the building built in front of the church in 1894, as well as the wing exteriors from 1896 and 1907 are classified historic monument in 1979.
Architectural Play
The house of the Fathers of the Most Holy Sacrament has a large architectural unity, although the conventual ensemble was built in several stages. The ensemble set takes the shape of a T with the main wing of the convent, the monastery and the novitiate, which forms a built front on Mont-Royal Avenue, and the church in the central position that unfolds towards rear. The long facade is decorated according to the Second Empire style, very fashionable style in the second half of the nineteenth century. We recognize that current stylistic by the use of a false mansard coated with gray slate and stone-clad bosses, which contrasts with the smooth stone around the bays.
The church integration mode is typical to all places of worship coupled with an urban monastery. Only the bell tower and the central front building, that stand by the care given to the decoration, signal the presence of the church in the complex. Note especially the portico framed by two pilasters, the freestone central bay and the monumental skylights that focus on making this advanced front office to the church. The great monstrance affixed to the top of the facade recalls the vocation of the sanctuary dedicated to the Most Holy Sacrament.
Inside, the church is arranged on a tripartite basis with a double row of side galleries and ends with an apse in half dome. The ceiling decorated with paintings on canvas by the artist Georges Delfosse and polychrome marble and stained glass create an unusual decorative effect.
