This monument to the 17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment Marker is in recognition of their service during the during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The regiment was commanded by Lieut. Col. Watt W. Floyd. This is the only monument to the 17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment on the battlefield.

To reach this monument:
From the parking area on Snodgrass Hill, head west pass the monuments on the hilltop. A trail will continue to the west near the 87th Indiana and the 2nd Minnesota monuments. Follow this path until you reach a clearing. A path will lead to the northwest (right) near the 78th Illinois and the 121st Ohio monuments. Follow this path to the monument.

Short Significance Description:

Monument contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & federal government to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.

Short Physical Description

1'6" wide x 1' deep x 3' high, the marker is a rectangular block of smooth-faced Tennessee gray marble inscribed on the front. Marks the unit's position on September 20, 1863, at sundown.
