Cincinnati Observatory - Astronomical Observatories on Waymarking.com

Located in Mt. Adams, a suburb of Cincinnati is what is known as “The Birthplace of American Astronomy”. The Cincinnati Observatory houses two of the oldest working Refractor telescopes in the world. The original telescope was an 11 inch Merz purchased in 1842 and was moved to a smaller building in 1904 when the 16 inch Alvan Clark telescope was purchased. Both buildings underwent extensive renovations and have been designated as National Historic Landmark. The Observatory is supported by the University of Cincinnati, however receives no monetary assistance, all restoration work is accomplished completely by donations and those that work there are all volunteers. No research is done there at this time however, the telescopes and other equipment are used in support of STEM programs.
