Neo-Byzantine Church of St. Nicholas (Vilniaus Šv. Nikolajaus Stebukladario palaiku Pernešimo cerkve), belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church, is one of several orthodox churches in Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
A legend tells us that the first church here was built by Juliana, a wife of Lithuaninan Grand Duke Algirdas around 1350. The building was destroyed by a fire, and in 1514 a new late-Gothic church with elements of Byzantine style, was erected. During its reconstruction after the second fire in 1748, his architecture was changed: the pediment, the facade and the heightened tower became Baroque. During the 19th century the church acquired its present neo-Byzantine appearance. The chapel inseide contains mosaic of St. Michael the Archangel, created at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Despite many reconstructions, the buildiing has preserved many authentic Gothic elements and inside there are valuable pieces of Byzantine art. Church of St. Nicholas is administered by Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.
