The European custom of tying locks to bridges to symbolize an eternal bond or love, and then throwing the key into the river, started in Rome in 2000. The cultural phenomenon has spread to Australia too. Since 2013 lovers have been attaching locks to the footbridge over the Yarra in Melbourne. Local stores have reported a big increase in padlock sales.
