This lonely chimney was the smokestack of the former Jefferson Davis Hospital's power plant near downtown Houston, Texas. The power plant operated from 1924-1938; it is now just left to itself, deteriorating over time.

The old Jefferson Davis Hospital, located near downtown Houston, TX, operated from 1924 to 1938 and was the first centralized municipal hospital to treat indigent patients in the city. It was abandoned for several years and in serious disrepair until 2005, when a real estate development organization restored it for use as a multi-unit housing complex in Houston's First Ward art district.
While the former hospital was restored, its nearby power plant building did not enjoy the same fortune: the 11-story high lonely smokestack can be seen jutting above the 2-story plant, continuing to deteriorate over time. As described by the hospital's original US National Register of Historic Places submission form in 2005:
"The power plant building is located to the rear and north [...] Completed in 1929, the Classical Revival building has a symmetrical A-B-A pattern. [...] A smokestack with concrete veneer rises from the rear of the building. [The power plant] housed water tanks and boilers that provided steam to the hospital via an above ground pipeline."
