Randolf Barnes Marcy was a U.S. Army officer assigned with the task of locating the headwaters of the Red River in Texas and Oklahoma. In March of 1852 his task was to "collect and report everything that may be useful or interesting." He and Capt George B. McClelland crossed thousands of previously undocumented territory. He discovered numerous valuable mineral deposits as well as twenty-five new species of mammals and ten of reptiles. During his expedition, he located the sources of both forks of the Red River and was the first white man to explore
Palo Duro and Tule Canyons.
This marker signifies his campsite during his expedition.
