L'Ircam est un centre français de recherche scientifique d'innovation technologique et de création musicale, fondé par Pierre Boulez en 1969. À la croisée du laboratoire et de l'université, de l'école d'art et de l'atelier de production, l'Ircam réunit des artistes et des scientifiques autour de projets communs. C'est aujourd'hui le plus grand institut au monde de recherche publique dédiée à la musique et au son.

À sa création, l'Ircam était entièrement souterrain, situé sous l'actuelle fontaine Niki de Saint-Phalle et Jean Tinguely de la place Igor-Stravinsky. Puis la tour de Renzo Piano a émergé en 1990 à l'angle de la Piazza, marquant l'inscription de l'Ircam dans le paysage urbain. Depuis 1996, l'institut arbore une façade horizontale hybride, constituée de deux autres volumes contigus à la tour, aussi disparates qu'une ancienne école Jules-Ferry et un bâtiment de Bains-Douches.

IRCAM is a scientific research center of French technological innovation and musical creation , founded by Pierre Boulez in 1969. At the crossroads of the laboratory and the university, the School of Art and Workshop production, IRCAM brings together artists and scientists around common projects . It is now the largest public research institute in the world dedicated to music and sound.

At its inception , IRCAM was entirely underground , beneath the current fountain Niki de Saint- Phalle and Jean Tinguely the place Igor- Stravinsky. Then the tower by Renzo Piano emerged in 1990 at the corner of Piazza , marking the entry of the IRCAM in the urban landscape . Since 1996 , the institute boasts a hybrid horizontal façade consists of two contiguous volumes to the tower, as disparate a former Jules Ferry school and Bains -Douches building.
