The canal is 127.25 miles long and flows from the inland woollen town of Leeds to the coastal sea port of Liverpool, crossing the Pennines along the way. Work on the canal started in 1770 and built in a number of sections and was finally completed in 1816.

The bridges on the canal are numbered from Liverpool. Any bridges built after the canal opened are given a letter suffix so that all original bridges retain their numbers. This bridge was originally the penultimate bridge from the end of the canal at Leeds. However the city of Leeds has expanded since the canal opened and there are now 8 later bridges between here and bridge 226.

Armley Mills was at one time the largest woollen mill in the world and the bridge is built into the retaining walls of the mill. The bridge and the walls were made an English Heritage Grade II Listed Building on 5th August 1976. link The mill has now been converted into the Leeds Industrial Museum.
