This plaque is dedicated to Connell’s Brigade commanded by Col. John M. Connell in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863 at 11:00 AM. There are three monuments to Connell’s Brigade on the battlefield.

Text on the plaque reads:
Connell’s Brigade
Brannan’s Division Thomas’ Corps.
Col. John M. Connell.
Sept. 20. 1863. 11 A. M.

82nd Indiana Col. Morton C. Hunter.
17th Ohio Lieut. Col. Durbin Ward.
31st Ohio Lieut. Col. Frederick W. Lister.
38th Ohio Col. Edward H. Phelps.
1st Michigan Light Battery D Capt. Josiah W. Church.

Except the 38th Ohio, which was on detached service, this brigade was attacked here in front and on its right flank about 11 A. M. The three brigades in the line immediately on its right had been ordered to the support of the union lines still further to the left, and it was while the last of these was moving across the gap thus created, that the Confederates delivered their attack. After a short but severe engagement with Hood’s division the brigade gave way and was forced to the rear in confusion, part rallying on Snodgrass Hill, the greater part going to Rossville. The battery lost five of its six guns.

From the NRHP nomination form:

  Structure Number: MT-564.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
