In Boston, near both the Boston Common and Boston Public Gardens, is this statue of Edgar Allen Poe, entitled, "Poe Returning to Boston."
The statue is located on a brick plaza at the corner of Boylston Street and Charles Street. It is of a life-sized sculpture of Poe who is posed walking briskly with his coat flying out. In one hand is a suitcase that is opening. Coming out of the suitcase is a great raven. Behind him, in separate parts, are images of paper with quotes from many of his works. There are many nice details about this statue. In particular, Poe's intense stare is captivating.
The statue was a long time coming. Poe's relation to Boston is ... complex. He was born in Boston not far away - a plaque that states this is on the nearby building (facing Boylston Street). He and much of the literary society of Boston did not get along. Yet, he did publish some of his most famous works, including, 'The Telltale Heart,' here. But, finally, near the 200th anniversary of his birth, people became interested in making a memorial to him, and the Edgar Allen Poe Foundation was formed. October 2014 was when this statue was revealed, as well as Poe Square where it stands.
