2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment Monument - Chickamauga National Battlefield - Specific Veteran Memorials on Waymarking.com

This monument is dedicated to 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This is one of five monuments to the 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment on the battlefield. It marks their location on Sept. 19, 1863 between 8 and 10 am.

This monument is vertically oriented monument has rock-faced base and shaft that alternated finished and rock-faced horizontal bands. The dimensions of the monument are 7' x 3' x 12'. The Unit designation is at the top of the monument. Below a relief sculpture depicts two soldiers in uniform. One soldier stands up right. He holds he gun in the right hand, the stock is resting on the ground. His left arm is fully extended, he holds the ram rod as he reloads his weapon. The second soldier is kneeling on his right knee, he holds his gun and the ready. There is a inscription on the rear of the monument.

The Second Regiment Minnesota Veteran Volunteer Infantry,
in Van Derveer's Brigade,
was here engaged Saturday, September 19th, 1863, between 8 and
10 o'clock, a.m., holding its position against repeated assaults
of the enemy, losing eight men killed and forty-one wounded.
