The story:

On our most recent waymarking jaunt, K was making an attempt to clean up the benchmarks along this stretch of the Crowsnest Highway that had been missed on the previous fifteen or so passes. There was (supposed to be) one on a culvert under the highway that he figured would be an easy find, as the lay of the land on Google maps told him pretty much where the culvert had to be. (As we all know, if they're not NAD83, coordinates published by NRCAN can be wildly inaccurate, and these coords weren't NAD83.)

So K pulls up at the presumed location, gets out of the car and disappears into the tall grass in the ditch while B waits in the car. Shortly he reappears with a look of dejection painted on his face. He crosses the highway and again disappears into the tall grass. A few moments later he again reappears, this time with a big smile and two thumbs up. B, naturally, assumes this to mean that he had found the BM.

Alas and alack, such was not the case. The BM was not to be found on either end of the culvert...
...BUT it DID have the date - 1947 - stamped in each end.

The culvert, in spite of having pretty good coordinates, WAS difficult to find, as it was fairly small and both ends were mostly covered over with grass. K removed much of the grass before taking the pix. It actually predates the highway by 15 years. Though there was a road here in 1947, and previously, the Crowsnest wasn't completed until 1962.
