During the Revolution Sullivan and Clinton joined forces to drive the Indians out of their territory. Sullivan's army came up through Pennsylvania, camping at Athens, Pennsylvania. Clinton's forces came down from Cooperstown, New York on the Susquehanna River. The forces met here. The Town of Union is named for the event. The armies later fought the Battle of Newtown, west of here. They then continued toward Rochester, New York. They destroyed many Indian villages along the way. Previous to the war the English had granted lands west of Broome County's eastern line to the Indians by treaty. This military event "opened" the land for settlement, which occurred shortly afterwards.
