During the Midsomer Regatta the rowing club chairman, Guy Sweetman, is found dead in the water. He has been bludgeoned to death and then put into the water. Sweetman was a philanderer so the natural motivation for the murder might be jealousy. However, the rowing club steward, Vic Lynton, tells Barnaby that he saw Sweetman arguing with Philip Trent, a committee member, John Parkway, a rower, and a fourth unknown man at Sweetmans boat. Investigation shows that the three men had money difficulties, so finance might also have been a motive.

One of Sweetman’s conquests was Clare Bonavita, the club secretary. It turns out that Clare had been bankrolling Sweetman, Trent and Parkway. Barnaby decides to have Scott observe Sweetman’s boat. Scott photographs the fourth man and identifies him as Ivan Hawkins, a local jeweller. Hawkins has form for embezzlement and Barnaby correctly guesses that the four were trying to rob the jeweller as part of an insurance fraud. The argument they had with Sweetman was because Sweetman was backing out. Barnaby and Scott manage to foil the robbery and arrest Trent and Hawkins. Parkway had backed out at the last minute.

The reason Sweetman had backed out of the robbery was because his latest girlfriend, Sandra Tate, had told him to. Unfortunately Sandra has disappeared. When she re-appears she is attacked by a masked motorcyclist, who puuts her into hospital. Barnaby and Scott stand vigil at the bedside. The motorcyclist tries again at the hospital and is arrested by Barnaby. The motorcyclist is Clare Bonavita. She confesses to having killed Sweetman in a fit of jealousy.
