The remnants of this relatively large building are hidden deep in the South March Highlands. The house had one stairwell entrance into the basement and two windows in the basement. In addition to the foundation, visitors will encounter artifacts such as bottles, jugs and a water trough.
According to the 1879 atlas for Carleton county, the land belonged to M Wilson. By the time of the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census material, the residents were John Owen Doyle (1840-1906), his wife Eliza (Patrick) Doyle (1845-1909) and their children Ellen, Anne Olivia, John, Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah and Joseph Andrew.
I wonder if the tree cover was so dense in decades past. Did the original inhabitants see much sun on their home?
The recommended access co-ordinates are for those waymarkers who can magically get along Huntmar Drive without having to park a vehicle. From these co-ordinates, there was once a lane - dating from the 1930s and now long grown over - from the town line (Huntley and March townships) to the waymarked remnants.
Hint: I usually park by the tracks off Terry Fox Drive and sneak in along the old First Line. The posted parking co-ordinates are for the safest place to leave your vehicle, Second Line.
