Near Middletown and at the Washington-Frederick County boundary, is where the Appalachian Trail (AT) crosses the Old National Pike - now designated Alt. US 40.
The location is near the entrance to the Washington Monument State Park and near the intersection with Dahlgren Road. Just west of the crossing is a parking lot for the South Mountain Inn, which has a few spaces designated for the Appalachian Trail. There are no signs specifically marking this as a trailhead; however, there are posts with the white blaze that identifies the trail on both sides.
The AT is an old trail that is 2185 miles long along peaks of the Appalachian Mountains and other ranges along the east coast. It was first conceived in 1921 and completed in 1937. It is hiked by hundreds of people a year, who either hike the complete route or take a piece of the trail. It is maintained by a consortium of Federal, State, and private agencies and organizations.
