"The statues date from about 1860. They were carved by local sculptor Andrew Davidson who was commissioned by the YMCA. For more than 80 years the statues were a dominant feature of the centre of Inverness, standing on top of the YMCA Building, in High Street. However, the building on which they stood, which by this time had become Grant’s Tartan & Tweed Warehouse, was demolished in 1955 and the statues were removed to the Burgh Surveyor’s yard where they remained until 1961. They were then bought by Norris Wood, a stonemason and antique collector from Orkney, and for many years they stood in the grounds of his home, Graemeshall House, near Holm, Orkney. Following his death, the statues were purchased by the Highland Council in 2007, and restored and relocated to the banks of the River Ness in March 2011, where they now stand in the small Ness Bank Gardens, at the front of Ness Bank Church."
