On Feburary 18, 1952 the Coast Guard Motor Life Boat CG 36500 rescued rescue 32 seamen off a sinking tanker Pendleton. The rescue was accomplished in 60-foot high seas using the small, under powered, wooden boat. This rescue is considered the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. As a result the four crew members were awarded the Coast Guard's highest honor, the Gold Lifesaving medal.

A boulder at the parking lot approach to Chatham Beach contains the propeller from Coast Guard Motor Life Boat CG 36500 along with an oval plaque serves as an historical marker for this event. The plaque is inscribed:
