Two camps of CCC persons were very active in this park. They not only built this beach house but also the twin dams to provide the lake that the swimming beach, and beach house are on. I chose the beach house for two reasons.
The first and main reason was to offer this waymark in memory of a man that I worked with for several years, and grew very fond of him. We worked at a place nearly 120 miles from this park, but we both knew it very well. He then retired and passed on shortly there after. As a young man, he was a member of the CCC Camp that built this beach house.
The second reason is that I grew up on a farm only 8 miles from this state park and enjoyed many weekends here in the summer. Some of the things that I did here were hiking, climbing, fishing, and of course, swimming in the summer. In the winter, after those special snowfalls that pack into ice, we would come here to sled down those switch-back roads that became too slippery to drive on. Many times, on those steel-runner sleds, we didn't make the corners.
Come and enjoy Iowa's oldest State Park. Look at all that the CCC built here, and don't forget to visit the CCC Museum nearby in this park.
P.S. Iowa's oldest active Geocache is in this park.
