"On the back of a brick warehouse facing the railroad tracks is a big sign saying "Hart's" -- and, in smaller type, "San Jose's big department store." A trace of blue graffiti creases the logo and the big heart behind it.
For four decades, that warehouse served San Jose's signature department store, which rivaled Hale's as a downtown anchor. The current owner of the warehouse, Charles Hackett, told me he has pledged to keep the sign. "It's part of the downtown heritage," he said." (
