Der erste Spatenstich zur Gründung des Tierparks erfolgte am 1. März 1958, im Park des Mausoleums aus dem 19. Jh. Mit den Jahren ist der Park immer mehr gewachsen und hat heute eine Größe von 11 Hektar.
Jährlich zählt der Zoo 100.000 Besucher. Dafür beherbergt der Zoo ungefähr 500 Exemplare aus insgesamt 120 verschiedenen Arten werden im Tierpark . Die meisten Tiere davon stammen aus dem europäischen Gebiet. Der Tierbestand reicht von Wölfen, Ziegen und Eseln über Kängurus und Lamas bis hin zum Jaguar und Nasenbären.
Die neuste Anlage im Park ist die Dünenlandschaft-Wattanlage, welche diversen Säbelschnablern, Kiebitzen etc. ein zu Hause bietet.
Für die artgerechte Tierhaltung wurde der Anlage 2009 der BDZ-Biber verliehen.
Des Weiteren lebt im Tierpark Dessaus die älteste Netzpython Europas. Sie hat eine Länge von 6,80 Meter und ist 32 Jahre alt.
