Chesters Fort is one of the best preserved Roman cavalry forts on Hadrian’s Wall.

Chesters Fort, known as Cilurnum, was constructed in 123 AD, just after the completion of Hadrians Wall. The fort guarded a bridge carrying a road that crossed the River North Tyne below the fort. The fort housed cavalry for incursions into barbarian lands to the North.
The fort was covered up in the early 19th century by Nathaniel Clayton, the owner of Chesters House, as part of landscaping his parkland. His son, John Clayton, was an antiquarian an uncovered the fort and catalogued his finds, founding a museum of finds on the site
The fort has outer walls with gates on each of the four faces. The East face has two entrances. In the centre of the fort are barracks, a headquarters building and the Commandant’s house. Outside the East gate is a bath house.
