A nice discovery was made here at the Torres-Martinez Indian Reservation headquarters with this Indian mortar which was once used by the Cahuilla Indians. It is located on a lawn in front of an office building, just past the entrance into the Reservation property. Also located here are a few historical buildings which comprise the Torres-Martinez Historical District and consists of three buildings believed to be the oldest standing Indian Agency buildings in the state of California. They are a one-room schoolhouse, a small cottage and a Indian Agency office. These buildings were erected in 1907. The Torres-Martinez Indian Reservation is a federally recognized tribal government and is one of six Indian reservations established by Executive Order of President Ulysses S. Grant in May 20, 1876. This Historical District was placer on the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1973 and is a California Point of Historical Interest.

Unfortunately, the the three historic buildings are fenced in and not accessible to the public without an escort due to vandalism issues. This Indian mortar is accessible though and a nice remnant from the past used by the Cahuilla Indian tribe.
