In Needham, within the Needham Cemetery, is an obelisk that memorializes minutemen from the town who lost their lives in the Battle of Lexington.

The obelisk is located on the south side of the cemetery, on a rise such that the obelisk is above the old part of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery from either entrance along Nehoiden Street. The obelisk is easy to see from either direction.

The monument is made of stone and stands over 15 ft tall. On the south side, the monument has the following text:

"In memory of
John Bacon
Amos Mills
Jonat. Parker
and
M. Chamberlain
who fell
at Lexington
April 19, 1775
for
Liberty They Died"

Base:

"Erected 1851"

A web page posted on the Needham Public Schools web site has information about the names listed.

Lt. John Bacon lived in far western part of Needham now part of Natick. He and three sons fought in Menotomy (now Arlington). He died there, but his sons saw further action in the war.

Pr. Amos Mills was in Captain Caleb Kingsbury's Company.

Sgt. Elisha Mills was in Capt. Robert Smith's Company.

Pr. Jonathon Parker was said to have left his plow in the field to answer the alarm for battle.

Pr. Nathaniel Chamberlain was in the East Needham Militia.

The same source states that four of the men are currently buried in Arlington's old cemetery, while Amos Mills' body was moved to this cemetery and is buried not far from this monument.
