This water-wise demonstration garden was created by Permian Basin Master Gardeners in consultation with members of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). It is part of the Jimmy Doolittle Memorial garden at the CAF American Airpower Museum in Midland TX.

Classes on water-smart gardening are held here on a regular basis to teach water-saving gardening tips and techniques in his dusty, arid patch of West Texas.

From the Texas Gardening website: (visit link)

"Home Landscape School (HLS) began in 1989. Permian Basin Master Gardeners have hosted HLS since 1991 when they took the registrations, set up the room and passed out handouts. At that time HLS was held on three nights in the spring in the Ector county Extension office. Then as now, Dr. George did the landscape design principles and Debbie Benge Frost talked about the landscape materials. Around 1992, Colonel Billy Barnhill and his wife Betty, attended the HLS. They visited with Permian Basin Master Gardeners over the break and from those discussions came the beginning steps toward a long and happy relationship with the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). Since that time, HLS has been held at the CAF over a four night period in September. In any given year about thirty-five people attend. In addition to the lectures, attendees tour the CAF xeriscape garden and receive a packet with horticulture information and a thirty minute design consultation."
