Built in 1949, the Castle opened in 1950 for an initial run of only about 25 years, when it closed in the mid 1970s. It remained closed until the 2000s, when it was reopened, revamped, restored and refurbished. It retains the majority of its art deco styling and furnishings, including decorative floor tile, interior decoration and seats, which were restored to match their original appearance exactly. Originally opened with a seating capacity of 400, after the renovations the capacity has been reduced to 200.

The theatre now presents vintage and special interest movies, Christmas specials, documentaries and family and children's movies. Since it does not screen movies on a daily basis the theatre is available to rent for occasions such as weddings, reunions, audio/video presentations, church functions, film screenings and conferences.

Admission for many of the movies shown, especially matinees, is by donation.
